Presented for your delectation is my first attempt at assembling something of my own making which resembles music fit enough for public consumption. The four tracks comprising Evening Light started life as noodles. My capable co-contributors were instrumental in the application of sufficient quantities of sauce. I thank them for their invaluable musical integrity and improvisational prowess.
- Tom Brophy
I'm tempted to cast my mind back to early June 2018, when Tom Brophy first approached me to ask whether I'd like a slice of his ambient, haunting musical pie. He didn't actually use those exact words, but I'm glad I accepted the slice.
Two and a bit months later and there we all were, sitting in Sheba curry house on London's Brick Lane after a surprisingly tiring day in the studio. Happy with what we'd laid down, our foggy minds turned to brainstorming ideas for album titles. Among the delirious lowlights: "For Whom the Naan Tolls", "Night Chasm" and "A Farewell to Naans." It's a good job Tom, (brains behind the operation from the start), plucked "Evening Light" from somewhere.
Roughly two months on from that day, thanks to my far superior musical co-creators, improvisers and friends: Tom Brophy and Maximilian Lawrie. To my parents for encouraging my musical inclininations, to my brother for letting me shamelessly steal his guitar on the day, and to Lewis Hamilton.
- James Rybacki
Having known Steve (Tom Brophy) for at least fifteen years, and what with us both having a keen interest in music, it was only natural that one of our many musical projects would get as far as this. Friday evenings of teenage years were spent constructing grand projects from a variety of genres: piano duets, many musicals, an opera, a jazz band called 'Chinaguila Tuesday', and others too numerous to count - a demonstration of our love of the process of making music. I'm glad this one can be shared publicly with you all. I'm looking forward to the next one, and to working again with two excellent (and funny) musicians, James and Steve.
