LINER NOTES -

During a recent webinar I hosted for some up-and-coming engineers and producers including Rudy Van Gelder, Teo Macero, Eddie Kramer and Rick Rubin, Rudy asked me:

'Tom, how do you get such a sense of intimacy and ambience in your recordings?'

'Well, Rudy,' I replied, 'if your pianist has a really creaky stool and their headphone cable keeps banging against the side of the piano, don't edit that stuff out. Just compress the shit out of the entire mix so it's really noticeable.'

Obviously, Teo was listening because shortly after that webinar he used the technique with Miles Davis - www.youtube.com/watch?v=W7QY-Kh5QMY (at 1:12 in this recording). The rest, as they say, is history.
